Bloom~n~Board Farm

In the beautiful Hudson Valley

Pawling, New York ‍ ‍Zone 6a

Our Story

Bloom n Board Farm was started without realizing we were starting a farm.  We started the process of purchasing my husband’s parents' property in 2020. It took a few years to finalize because we were in midst of the pandemic.  In the meantime - we started our site work and in the process of clearing our driveway - which resulted in dozens of beautiful white oaks and other trees that were felled. Having been raised in New Paltz (designated as a Tree City, USA ) the idea of turning these beautiful trees into firewood was a travesty in my mind.  Frank challenged me to figure out what to do with them. And so I did!

The Board of Bloom and Board…. “Heritage wood. Family Made. Forever Strong”…

I contacted a local sawyer that had a mobile wood mill.  He milled about  1/3 of our logs into boards and because we were in the middle of the pandemic - he got very busy with other calls wasn't able to return for a long time.  In my infinite wisdom - I decided it would be a brilliant idea to purchase a wood mill for my Bronx born, Cole Haan shoe wearing, has to have his Polo collars with medium starch only, "I hate snakes we should live in a condo" husband.  Low and behold ... as time has gone on - Frank has fallen in love with milling and has evolved into a true sawyer.  His knowledge of trees and the land we live on,  his demand to make sure any sapling or even scrub tree removed is approved by him first, (with his signature on the appropriate release document), the vast community that he has built with other fellow sawyers both locally and internationally and his multiple workboots collection - has anyone that has ever known him completely "floored".  Who knew?

Frank took the remaining 75 + logs that we had and he learned how to mill all of them. He contacted local mills that were able to kiln dry and shape the boards and in June of 2024 - almost 4 years after starting the process - those beautiful oak trees are now installed as our hardwood floors throughout our new home.

Frank’s great grandfather had been an expert guide boat builder in the Adirondacks and both Frank's grandfather and father had also been sawyers in the Saranac area.  Frank always referred to his dad as Father Nature.  And sadly, Frank’s Dad aka “Babe” passed away in 2022 and did not see the final results of his beautiful trees milled and placed in our home.  But, we know that those trees - our floors - at some point were touched, pruned or intentionally grown by Frank's dad - so, although he is not with us anymore ... we feel we have a part Babe and his legacy in our home all of the time.

Frank continues to learn more about milling everyday and is currently campaining for a bigger and stronger mill with a hydraulic lift. He currently lifts 3500 lb logs with mechanial advantage and several prayers everytime.

The Bloom of Bloom and Board…”Blooming smiles and memories in every season”…

During the process of building our new home and making the property our own - I would send daily photos to share with my Dad. He (like everyone else) was impressed and surprised by Frank’s persistence in learning more and more about milling. When I was a little girl, my Brookly born dad and I would often walk in the woods behind our house and flip over rocks to discover “new worlds”. While taking several wilderness and nature classes to get his Master’s Degree he would take me along on occassion. Together we learned about the New World Warbler, Black-capped chickadee, American Goldfinch (or fitchet as I called them) and so many more. We learned how to identify trees and various native plants and learned which plants were beneficial and which ones were not. Unfortunately, we learned how to identify poison ivy and poison oak the hard way.

My dad and I planted our first veggie garden when I was 5 years old. I was so excited about growing our very own sweet corn and waxed beans. Again - the learning curve to becoming a country living family was real - we discovered that the deer also liked many of the veggies we grew. We planted trees and various flowers every year for my mom on Mother’s day. My amazing dad aka the G.O.A.T. sadly passed in early 2024. I decided that I would build a legacy garden in honor of my mom and dad as part of my grief journey. Well - that garden turned into 2 then 3 then a 40x60 flower field, then another 170 x 50 field and finally in Ocotober of 2024 - my husband (who had been incredibly patient and accepting of my rather large grief project) stopped me in my tracks and asked, “Sweetie - what is the end goal here? Are you starting a flower farm or something??”. Although his question had a thick layer of sarcasm - a light bulb went off and I responded with, “YES! That’s a great idea!!! Yes! I’m starting a flower farm!!”. So - with very little knowledge of soil amending, propogating plants from cuttings, pest control, weather challenges, irrigation, companion plants, etc. etc. I went full steam ahead with starting a flower farm. And I can honestly tell you that although we were working untold hours a week with our other “real” business -we found ourselves working another 60 hours a week on our new farm. And our learning curve? We should have PHd’s after the 2025 season. In the fall of 2025, Frank built my beautiful BLOOM BOX which offers amundant bouquets filled with flowers all grown on our farm.

As we roll closer to 2026 - we are amending our plans and goals for our property and where most people who are looking at retirement on the horizon - we are all in on working our land, growing sustainable plants and produce, using natural resources and giving back to the earth. - with very little sleep.
